The stories are set in various locations, including New York City, rural Illinois, and the American West. The characters are diverse, ranging from a successful businessman to a struggling farmer, and their experiences highlight the complexities of life in early 20th-century America. Dreiser's writing style is realistic and introspective, delving deep into the inner thoughts and emotions of his characters.
