It is Wednesday, January 18th, 2006, and a boy of sixteen is determined to end his life. An absurd set of circumstances has come together-circumstances that for any other boy his age would be the simplest thing in the world to overcome. But to Iran, they sound the death knell that leads him step by step toward an ignominious end.

Our hero's great nemesis is an assignment for one of his classes. Each morning he awakens to do battle with it, and each evening he goes to bed defeated by his foe. He is tortured by the idea that the assignment is already long overdue, and that by failing it he will fail the course along with everything in his life. In fact, everything in his life is already a failure. His friendships-nonexistent. His connection to his family-severed long ago. The only thing that remains is his singular focus: the assignment, and the doom that will come when he fails to turn it in.

Over the twelve days that follow, will our hero be able to rise to the challenge and overcome his enemy? Or will the assignment gain the upper hand, forcing him to snuff out his life to escape from it . . .
