Innocent Alice is in desperate need of work to support her recently widowed mother and two younger siblings. At the recommendation of an aunt, she leaves the inner-city slums behind to accept a position as maid to Earl Sebastian Howard in pristine Mayfair, where a dark house haunted by secrets of the past is the least of her worries. Rumor has it, the reclusive master's previous maid is dead, and Alice is just one replacement in a long line of forgotten girls. As the days draw into weeks, in the confines of her new role, Alice's presence seems to disturb the Mad Earl and his gloomy routine. Surely, this lonely man with the gentle voice and inquiring gaze can't be as dangerous as they say? Indeed, when the arrival of spring delivers an unexpected invitation for Alice to join the master at his country residence, an unlikely bond blossoms fast between them behind closed doors. However, the master's peculiar affection soon becomes a hazard to Alice. Torn apart by her decision to leave Stanley Hall, the earl denies Alice a happy future and vows his revenge. Caught in her own downward spiral, Alice soon learns that the only things tighter than corsets in Victorian society are the lies that uphold respected family names. The heartache Alice believed was long over has only just begun. The master's untimely reappearance is a dangerous move, but who will pay the ultimate price? Is the ugly truth better than a pretty lie? Turns out, two really can't keep a secret...See what other Wattpad readers are talking about: Just read the whole book in about 9 hours (overnight). Fabulous read, just what my insomnia needed.
