With fearless candor and lyrical precision, Taylor Portela guides readers through nightclubs and church pews, family genealogies and drag performances, desert trails and urban landscapes. By interweaving three prose-poem books (Lavender, Taylor, and Portela) they craft a near-holy text, in the traditions of Whitman and Ginsberg, that sanctifies the profane and profanes the sacred. Each piece serves as both wound and suture, confession and absolution.
Tranny Muse embraces contradiction as sacrament -- simultaneously reverent and blasphemous, tender and obscene, anchored in tradition yet fiercely innovative. Portela's voice emerges as a necessary intervention in contemporary poetry, reclaiming slurs and celebrating the messy contradictions of lived experience with equal fervor.
This collection goes far beyond formally inventive autobiography. Like those in the poetic lineage inspiring Tranny Muse, Portela shape-shifts the self to contain multitudes, inviting readers to witness the glory of uncontainable existence: I want to be famous like a burning library.
