The story tells of a 6-year-old boy named Tommy who is fascinated with the moon. Inside his head, his creative imagination runs wild and wonders what shape will appear. He wishes on the brightest star to bring him the answers, then jumps into bed and falls asleep. When a golden light appears in his room, he wakes up scared. A very bright star named Ellie speaks to Tommy and says she was sent down to Earth to make a little boy's wish come true. She tells him there is a very special person who can answer all his questions and asks him to sit on the moonbeam with her and hold on tight. Within seconds, they move through the night sky and out of sight.
He experiences being scared, finding courage, having faith, and finding new caring friends, before he ends up back in his warm bed again. Tommy knows he can see his friends each night. He waits for Ellie to twinkle, and all his friends will appear.
