When Sylas awakens, he is intrigued by the peculiar woman at his side, but bemused by how even with his lighthearted quips, she remains cold and guarded. To him, her dismissive nature and her father's overprotectiveness prove what he feared all along: the war has left him inhuman, monstrous, and unworthy of finding love.
Melanie, meanwhile, feels guilt for enjoying Sylas's colorful sense of humor and impish mannerisms, and tries to withhold her affections. She does not wish to find love again - not when she already had a pure, beautiful romance. But when Sylas prepares to return home, Melanie must face the question she fears most: is it better to have loved and lost twice, or to take a chance on the one man who pumped her heart back to life?
