This memoir has impacted me as much for the hardness of the youth as well as the ability to survive and rise above adversity and maintain a sense of optimism and above all to maintain the faith in humanity. I get the feeling that thanks to a singular mix of ingenuity, vitality and pragmatism he has always been able to see the positive aspects of humanity.
The fact that the story has a happy continuity up to today grants the story a sense of universality and bravery.
This is a song to peace. Today seeing that we are newly sullied by National demagogues, this story has an even more important place than ever.
This is the story of an intellectual Westerner with a spirit directed to what today .we are missing. His world and time reflect Western optimism.
It is so direct and sincere so not epic and so little warlike but without hiding anything. It resulted in a great hopeful manner of understanding the contradictions that must have affected so many young people and not only young Germans.
