Depression is much more complex than just sadness; it eats away at the very soul. Hayes illustrates the many, many ways in which depression manifests after abuse, but he also shows those who are victimized that there is a way to get through it and past it and emerge victorious as healthy, happy individuals with a hope for tomorrow.
