As Elias spars with his well-meaning handler, lectures alien students, and annotates a cheerful So You've Decided to Care for a Human! brochure, the book asks a quietly unsettling question: if we ever get off the leash, will we treat anything weaker than us any differently than they did-or than we once did ourselves?
