Most whittling books hand you forty projects in no particular order and let you fail at all of them the same way, over and over, because nothing ever taught you the five moves your hands actually needed.
The Whittling Path is built differently. It's a course, not a list - seven short chapters that teach you exactly what to hold, how to read a piece of wood, and five core cuts, in the order you actually need them. Only then do you pick up a project blank. Every one of the ten projects that follow uses nothing but those same five cuts, applied a little further each time. No hidden skill jumps. No project that assumes you already know something the book never showed you.

- The two tools that actually matter for whittling - and which ones you can safely ignore, whatever the starter kit bundles try to sell you
- How to read wood grain by eye and by feel, so a cut goes where you mean it to instead of splitting where you didn't
- The five cuts - push cut, paring cut, thumb-push cut, pull cut, stop cut - that every project in this book, and most whittling projects anywhere, is built from
- How to sharpen and strop a sloyd knife so a dull blade never gets blamed for a mistake it didn't make
- Safety habits built into every chapter from the first page, not a one-time warning label you skim past
Then, ten complete projects, start to finish: a two-link wood chain, a ball-in-a-cage, an eating spoon, a mushroom, a gnome, an owl, a sitting fox, a turtle, a walking stick topper, and a relief-carved letter opener. Each one builds on the last. By the letter opener, a technique that looked advanced on page one is just two familiar cuts, applied at a slightly larger scale.
Every pattern for every project is included, with a grain-direction arrow and clear dimensions for each piece - nothing to hunt down separately, nothing sold as a second product.
What this book won't do: promise you'll produce gallery-quality figures by project ten, pretend a sharp knife makes force unnecessary, or tell you whittling treats anything a doctor should be treating. It will tell you, plainly, what a cut needs and why - and then get out of your way so you can go make it.
