The stories contained within this collection are closely based on true events born from the deep. Between June 1974 and December 1978, I served aboard United States Navy nuclear-powered Fleet Ballistic Missile (FBM) submarines, completing a total of eight strategic deterrent patrols.

While certain names have been changed, dialogue reconstructed, and specific timelines condensed to protect operational security and privacy, the events, challenges, and encounters in these pages are drawn directly from real life. The relentless hum of the ventilation, the profound isolation of a hundred days beneath the waves, the absolute reliance on the crew member to your left and right, and the heavy weight of the mission-these are truths I lived, and are based on actual events.
