The Valley of Decision is a novel written by Edith Wharton and published in 1902. The story is set in the late 19th century in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and focuses on the lives of two families, the Scotts and the Courtlands. The Scotts are a wealthy family who own a steel mill, while the Courtlands are their tenants who work in the mill. The novel explores the social and economic tensions between the two families, as well as the personal relationships and conflicts that arise within each family. The main character is Marylynn, the daughter of the Courtlands, who falls in love with Paul, the son of the Scotts. Their love is complicated by the class differences between their families and the disapproval of Paul's mother, who wants him to marry someone of his own social status. The novel also delves into the issues of labor relations and workers' rights during the industrial revolution, as the workers in the steel mill organize and strike for better working conditions and wages. Overall, The Valley of Decision is a complex and nuanced exploration of class, love, and social change in America during the turn of the century. At length the moon rose, and toward midnight Odo, spurring out of a dark glen, found himself at the opening of the valley of Donnaz. A cold radiance bathed the familiar pastures, the houses of the village along the stream, and the turrets and crenellations of the castle at the head of the gorge. The air was bitter, and the horses' hoofs struck sharply on the road as they trotted past the slumbering houses and halted at the gateway through which Odo had first been carried as a sleepy child. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
