Unpacking a single Bachmann poem, novelist Tom McCarthy latches onto two of its central terms -- the eponymous threshold and ledger -- and takes off on a line of flight: through the work of Franz Kafka, David Lynch, Anne Carson, Sappho and Shakespeare.
