The book's central lesson is simple:
A model tells you what might happen. A decision framework determines what you do about it.
The running case study follows a fictional telecom company whose strong churn model initially fails-not because the model is bad, but because the organization applies an arbitrary threshold without considering the very different costs of unnecessary intervention and missed churn.
From there, the book progressively develops a practical framework: map the decision, understand the costs, calculate the threshold, rank possible actions, account for operational capacity, validate the probabilities, create the operating policy, measure ROI, and establish a cadence for revisiting the decision.
The framework is not limited to customer churn. The book demonstrates how the same thinking can translate to problems such as loan defaults, hospital readmissions, equipment failures, fraud detection, forecasting, and other predictive analytics applications.
And when the prediction itself is uncertain, the framework expands beyond a simple threshold-using ranges, confidence, prediction intervals, communication practices, and explicit recognition that the real world may not cooperate with the forecast.
