That idea is hopeful, because it means violence is not a bolt from the blue that no one could have stopped. But it is also demanding, because it puts the responsibility somewhere uncomfortable: on the ordinary systems and ordinary people who encounter the warning signs first. The security guard at the door rarely sees the early warning. The supervisor, the HR officer, and the team lead usually do.
What this book will give you?
You will learn how to tell the difference between someone who is angry and someone who is dangerous, which are not the same thing and are often confused. You will learn why the popular image of the kind of person who does this is wrong, and why behaviour matters more than personality or background. You will learn how to build a small team that can receive a concern, look into it calmly, and decide what to do, without either panicking or dismissing it.
The book also covers the parts that are easy to neglect. How to write a reporting policy that people will actually use. How to talk to a person of concern without making things worse. How to handle a termination that carries real risk. What the law lets you do, and what it does not. How to prepare for the rare but catastrophic event of an active attacker, and how to keep a prevention programme alive once the initial alarm has faded.
Each chapter ends with practical material you can use directly. The appendices give you a team charter, a concern report form, a quick reference to warning behaviours, and a set of interview prompts. You can adapt them to your own organisation rather than starting from a blank page.
Who it is for?
I wrote this for the people who carry the responsibility but rarely get the training. A factory floor manager. A school principal. A clinic administrator. An HR generalist at a mid-sized firm with no dedicated security staff. A small business owner who has just had a frightening encounter and does not know whether to worry. The methods here are the same ones used by professional threat assessment teams in large institutions, explained in plain terms and scaled down so a small organisation can use them.
If you are a security or HR professional with formal training, you will find the book a useful structure for explaining your work to colleagues and leaders who do not share your background. Getting an organisation to take prevention seriously is often harder than the assessment itself.
