The Tajmahal is among the most recognisable buildings in the world. Its white marble, graceful dome and reflecting pool have become enduring symbols of Shah Jahan's love for Mumtaz Mahal. Yet its Qur'anic inscriptions, religious setting and surrounding buildings invite us to look more closely at what this extraordinary place was intended to mean.
In The Tajmahal? Mosque or Monument, A. K. Bakht examines the relationship between remembrance, burial and worship within the Tajmahal complex. Written in clear, accessible English, the book introduces the familiar account of its creation and explores questions about its architecture, historical descriptions and religious purpose.
What does the expression funeral mosque mean? Does it describe a particular building or a wider religious complex? How should we understand the relationship between the central marble mausoleum, the western mosque and the eastern building known as the jawab? And what can the surviving evidence establish about their functions?
Across twenty-two chapters, the book explores:
- Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal: the personal loss, imperial setting and religious outlook behind the building's creation.
- The complete complex: its gardens, gateways, central marble building and flanking structures, considered together.
- Mosques and mausoleums: their distinguishing features and the ways burial, prayer and remembrance can share a religious setting.
- The Qur'anic inscriptions: their themes of mercy, judgement and Paradise, and their place in understanding the monument.
- The Eight Paradises arrangement: the meaning of this architectural concept and its relationship to the central chamber and surrounding rooms.
- The cenotaphs and burials: the distinction between the visible memorials and the burial arrangements below.
- The western mosque and eastern jawab: their architectural relationship, recorded uses and questions about accommodation and ceremonial functions.
- Historical language and testimony: the Padshahnama, Mughal court accounts, European travellers, and terms such as rauza, maqbara and masjid.
- Drawings, restoration and modern interpretation: how the site has been recorded, maintained and described, including the language used by ICOMOS and UNESCO.
Throughout, the book asks readers to consider how far each piece of evidence supports an interpretation. It explores whether familiar labels adequately express the religious life and meaning of the whole complex, while acknowledging the established account of the central building as a mausoleum.
Illustrations, documentary appendices, a bibliography, a glossary and an index support further reading. No specialist knowledge of Mughal history, architecture or Islamic terminology is required.
