I looked closely at the face, which was upside down and averting its gaze. I had expected it to be standing so that I could face it properly, and black and sooty as if fresh from disaster. Instead it was upside down. The whole figure was upside down, on its back, sort of limp, and it was behind glass, and only plaster anyway. Still. I studied the furrowed whisper of a brow and the tightly closed eyes and the sharp nose and prominent pleading mouth. It was a very human expression in the grey plaster upside down beside the vaguer forms...
