The Prodigal Son is a novel written by Hall Caine, first published in 1904. The story follows the life of a young man named Mark Galloway, who grows up in a wealthy family in the Isle of Man. Despite his privileged upbringing, Mark falls in love with a young woman from a lower social class, which leads to a rift with his family. Mark decides to leave home and start a new life in London, where he becomes a successful journalist. However, Mark's success is short-lived as he falls into a life of debauchery and excess. He becomes addicted to opium and alcohol, and his relationships with women become increasingly tumultuous. Mark's life spirals out of control, and he eventually hits rock bottom. In the midst of his despair, Mark receives a letter from his estranged father, inviting him to return home. Mark reluctantly agrees, and upon his return, he is met with forgiveness and a chance to start anew. However, Mark's past catches up with him, and he must confront the consequences of his actions. The Prodigal Son is a tale of redemption and forgiveness, exploring themes of family, social class, and the dangers of excess. It is a powerful and moving story that has captivated readers for over a century.1904. English novelist who was secretary to Dante Gabriel Rossetti, he lived with him until the poet's death and then wrote Recollections of Rossetti. His enormously popular novels, some of Manx life, others on biblical themes, include The Shadow of a Crime, The Deemster, The Manxman, The Christian, The Prodigal Son, and The Master of Man. The novel begins: Iceland had never looked more wonderful. The stern old Northland, which in the daylight bears always and everywhere on its sphinx-like face the mutilating imprint of the burnt-out fires of ten thousand ages, and would seem to be dead but for the murmurings of volcanic life in its sulfurous womb, lay in the autumn moonlight like a great creature asleep-calm, august, and blue as the night.
