Robert J. Riganati didn't set out to find himself. He just needed to get out of the life he had already outgrown.
The Present is the true story of Robert's solo backpacking journey through Europe in 1997; before smartphones, before constant connection, before the world felt small. Armed with a backpack, Eurail pass, and journal, Riganati - in his early twenties - leaves home with no plan, more questions than answers, and quickly discovers that uncertainty can be a gift.
The book follows the trip as it unfolds: missed plans, chance encounters, long train rides, cheap hostels, late nights, and the strange intimacy that comes from being completely alone in unfamiliar places. It explores what happens when he learns to trust himself without a safety net, no itinerary, no expectations, and no one else deciding what comes next.
Woven through the journey are the thoughts of Robert's younger self - idealistic, restless, searching - revisited through the lens of the man he has become decades later. Time softens certain memories and sharpens others. What remains are the moments that mattered most: conversations with strangers, mistakes that taught more than success ever could, and the realization that life doesn't reveal itself all at once. It unfolds in the present moment.
This is not a guidebook. It is not a highlight reel. It's a messy, funny, uncomfortable, and exhilarating experience about stepping away from expectation and into the unknown. About choosing experience over certainty and learning that life doesn't need to be figured out in advance.
For anyone who has ever felt the urge to leave, to wander, to slow down and pay closer attention, The Present is for you.
