In the fall of 1936, Black Birmingham is not waiting for permission.
On Fourth Avenue, an entire self-sustaining world has been built from the red clay up. The Dunbar Theatre. Wash on Fourth laundromats. Elias Vance's tailor shop, where Negro League Football(TM) uniforms have been cut and sewn since 1917. And Lucy Webb's rooming house, where a Tennessee A&I graduate quietly operates an intelligence network stretching far beyond Birmingham.
These are institutions born of necessity. Built deliberately. Owned, protected, and thriving.
Now, outsiders from Nashville and Chicago have begun circling what Black Birmingham has built.
At the center of this world stands Cornelius James, owner of the Birmingham Hammers. His lineage didn't arrive seeking opportunity; they were brought shackled, against their will. Cornelius's inheritance begins in West Africa with Adeola, runs through a Reconstruction-era courthouse in Alabama, and extends on forty-seven acres of Shelby County land purchased by his father, Solomon. Now, Cornelius watches his football team from a folding chair on four steps of pine board above Mitchell Field's red clay. Every generation added something. None surrendered anything.
As rival dynasties collide, Cornelius finds himself fighting a battle far bigger than football-a battle for ownership, community, and the right to keep what generations fought to build.
The Inheritance is the first installment of The Owner's Box, the story of what is built when you are given nothing, and the fight to hold it.
