At the edge of a playground stands a tall old sycamore tree whose branches stretch wide like open arms. Hidden among its leaves is a quiet place where two friends, Emma and Liam, spend their afternoons talking about school, favorite songs, snacks, and the small details of childhood. It is a place that feels safe, steady, and welcoming.
As their conversations continue, Emma begins to notice that some of Liam's experiences are different from her own. While she talks easily about family traditions, movie nights, and ordinary moments at home, Liam becomes quiet. Sometimes he seems worried. Sometimes loud noises make him flinch. Though Emma does not fully understand what her friend is going through, she notices something important: Liam may be carrying burdens that no child should have to carry alone.
With kindness, patience, and compassion, Emma shares a simple but powerful message. If something at home feels scary, confusing, or unsafe, it is okay to tell a trusted adult. Teachers, counselors, neighbors, family friends, and other caring adults are there to listen, support, and help. Through the safety of friendship and the comfort of a trusted space beneath the branches of the sycamore tree, Liam begins to understand that his voice matters and that asking for help is an act of courage.
The Old Sycamore: A Safe Place is a gentle, age-appropriate story designed to encourage conversations about emotional safety, trusted adults, and the importance of speaking up when something does not feel right. Written with sensitivity and hope, the book provides children with a framework for recognizing supportive relationships while reassuring them that they are never alone.
Created through a collaboration between child advocate Peter LeFaivre and author S. Lee Davis, this story was developed as a resource for children, families, educators, school counselors, and social workers. Rather than focusing on fear, it emphasizes trust, resilience, friendship, and the life-changing impact of being heard.
Whether read at home, in the classroom, or as part of a counseling program, The Old Sycamore: A Safe Place offers an opportunity to open meaningful conversations and empower children with an important message: there are safe people who care, there are adults who will help, and every child deserves to be heard.
