A nostalgic trait streaks across this collection of poems, likelightening on the hills, infusing each poem with the poet's desire toreturn to the land of his birth. This collection, as well as the previous,Of Flour and Tears and Along The Odokoko River, derivesmetaphorical sustenance from the poet's fidelity to location; they areabout love and longing for the communities in the central and eastend of Freetown and beyond, communities that are uniquely meltingpots stoked by the history of the abolition of slavery, spiced by Islamand stirred by African traditions to create a blend of people with amark of resilience and authenticity. Undoubtedly, Ahmed Koroma isthe poet of the melting pot, with nostalgic freshness that is evident inthe steaming images of the poems.Oumar Farouk Sesay, Sierra Leonean poet and novelist, and author ofThe Edge of a Cry and Landscape of Memories
