Bulgaria has long been one of the poorest countries of Europe. After the second world war it also became known for being ruled by a brutal, hard line Marxist regime that ruthlessly crushed dissent and persecuted ethnic and religious minorities. Small communities of evangelical Christians managed to survive, a legacy of American missionaries earlier in the twentieth century, but they were viewed with suspicion by authorities.
In every age there have been courageous individuals who cannot be constrained by borders, relentlessly pushing to live in a place of greater freedom and opportunity. Jim Dimov was one of those people, propelled by a driving need to practice his faith freely, the will to try every possibility, and the faith to be guided by his unshakable belief in a higher power. Even after escaping Bulgaria, he and other refugees in Greece were viewed with mistrust. It was a cruel irony that they were often suspected of being Communist infiltrators. Jim Dimov believed that God's plan was for him to ultimately relocate to America and become a Christian Missionary.
He soon discovered that life in America was different than he had imagined, but he kept his faith and his strong work ethic, and was able to make a new life for himself. This incredible story has been repeated countless times. But nonetheless, in many societies, fear and suspicion of newcomers who have fled from fear, tyranny and corruption remains. Jim Dimov's Miraculous Escape remains a testament to the yearning to breathe free!
