The Little Gray Notebook is the fourth chapter in the story of a middle-class German family stretching from the 1920s to the 1950s. That chapter begins in 1946 with the return of a POW to a smitten country and a ruined city. It talks about the hunger years (1946 - 1948) and those of the German miracle, the economic recovery from 1948 to 1953. It ends with the emigration of a young family destined for the United States. Many pictures enliven the story: the destroyed city of Coblence, the life of a hungry student in a divided country, the love and marriage of a young couple who possessed no more than clothes on their backs, and the birth and early childhood of their daughters.
