The story of brothers Emilio Adolfo and Emilio Adolfo Rivero Caro is one of the individual histories of the Cuban revolution. The two brothers had been intransigent political enemies. Emilio Adolfo, the older, an anti-communist, had fought first against the Batista dictatorship and then, when the Revolution had produced totalitarian rule, against Fidel Castro. Adolfo, the younger brother, had been a communist militant since before the Revolution and a mortal enemy of his brother's political beliefs. Eventually, he had become a dissenter in the Castro government, then, like his brother, first a prisoner, then an exile. In meeting his brother at Orly, Emilio Adolfo had honored a pledge made eight years before to wait for him at any airport in the world where he might land. For nineteen years the two brothers barely had been but brief visits when Emilio Adolfo and when he was in prison and after being pardoned is preparing to leave Cuba. The story of the Odyssey told by Emilio Adolfo in this book has the courage and sincerity of his brother when in the Introduction sets out what he told the agents of state security on its imprisoned brother: I believe that you should execute him before the firing squad. With my brother, there is no deal. There will never be one.
