The Little Bayou Mermaid is a children's picture book narrated in verse, centering around a mermaid named Aqualina who resides in a murky lagoon. She finds a friendship with a Cajun boy named Remy when he frees her fin from a tangled fishnet. Eager to expand her horizons, she asks Remy to read his schoolbooks to her, yearning to learn about the world beyond her watery domain. Witnessing her eyes illuminate with newfound knowledge ignites Remy's aspiration to become a teacher. However, as summer approaches, he must depart for college, far from the enchanting bayou, yet he vows to return. When he fails to come back, the Little Bayou Mermaid employs the wisdom she learned in the books to embark on a quest to find him.
