**Cape Town, South Africa - June 20, 2026**
**Zara Mbeki was thirty-nine years old when she woke up to an empty continent.**
A former war correspondent turned wildlife documentarian, Zara had spent her life bearing witness - to conflict, to extinction, to the slow unraveling of the natural world. She had survived kidnappings, gunfire, and the psychological toll of watching humanity destroy itself.
She was not prepared for this.
When the Vanishing came, Zara was in her apartment in Bo-Kaap, the colorful Cape Malay neighborhood overlooking Table Mountain. She had been editing footage of endangered rhinos when the world went silent - not gradually, but all at once, like a switch had been flipped.
She walked through the empty streets of Cape Town. She climbed Table Mountain. She stood at the edge of the continent and looked out at the Atlantic, wondering if anyone else was out there.
She found no one.
For weeks, Zara survived alone, documenting everything - the returning wildlife, the collapsing infrastructure, the impossible silence. She raided museums and archives, preserving what she could. She broadcast on every frequency, desperate for a voice.
But Africa was empty. All 1.4 billion people, gone.
