The Last of the Valerii is a novel by American author Henry James, first published in 1874. Set in Italy, the story follows the life of a young American named Newman, who becomes enamored with the Valerii family, an aristocratic Italian family with a long and storied history. Despite their initial reluctance to accept him, Newman eventually becomes close with the Valerii, particularly the beautiful and mysterious Claire, who he hopes to marry. However, as Newman becomes more involved with the Valerii, he begins to uncover dark secrets about their past, including a tragic family curse that threatens to destroy them all. As he struggles to navigate the complex social dynamics of Italian high society, Newman must also grapple with his own feelings of love and loyalty, and ultimately decide whether to stay with the Valerii or leave them behind.Written in James' signature style, The Last of the Valerii is a gripping tale of love, betrayal, and redemption, set against the backdrop of one of the most beautiful and fascinating countries in the world. With its richly drawn characters and vivid descriptions of Italian life and culture, this novel is a timeless classic of American literature. She rode with him sometimes in the tufty shadow of aqueducts and tombs, and sometimes suffered him to show his beautiful wife at Roman dinners and balls. She played dominoes with him after dinner, and carried out in a desultory way a daily scheme of reading him the newspapers. This observance was subject to fluctuations caused by the Counts invincible tendency to go to sleep, a failing his wife never attempted to disguise or palliate. She would sit and brush the flies from him while he lay picturesquely snoozing, and, if I ventured near him, would place her linger on her lips and whisper that she thought her husband was as handsome asleep as awake. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
