The King's Ward is a historical fiction novel published in 1898 by Jessie Perry Van Zile Belden. The story is set in England during the reign of King Henry VIII and follows the life of a young girl named Cecily Neville, who is taken in as a ward of the king after her father's death. As a ward, Cecily is placed under the care of a noble family, the Howards, and is raised alongside their daughter, Anne. The two girls become close friends, but their lives take very different paths when Anne catches the eye of the king and becomes his second wife, Queen Anne Boleyn. Cecily, meanwhile, falls in love with a young man named John Dudley, but their relationship is threatened by the political turmoil surrounding the king's marriages and his break from the Catholic Church. As Cecily navigates the dangerous court politics and struggles to keep her relationship with John alive, she must also confront her own identity and loyalties as a ward of the king. The King's Ward is a captivating tale of love, friendship, and betrayal set against the backdrop of one of the most tumultuous periods in English history. Belden's vivid descriptions of court life and the characters' inner thoughts and emotions bring the story to life, making it a must-read for fans of historical fiction. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
