Cassie Barnes is on her way to a new life in a small New Hampshire town. Battered by years of living with a brutal guardian, then working in a factory where co workers sought to manipulate her life, she has finally reached financial independence and the freedom to live a life of quiet happiness, enjoying everything her new home of Stanton has to offer.Until she is mistakenly identified as a woman who had an affair with a wealthy citizen of Stanton. When she is attacked and injured and hospitalized her first instinct is to leave Stanton, but events conspire to make the situation more bizarre after she files a lawsuit. The entire town seems to blame her because she is forced to shoot one of the people who attacked her to save her own life. A loveable puppy, an irrational minister and a woman who refuses to acknowledge the wrong she is doing. Combine that with two men who find Cassie extremely attractive, one of them the town police chief, jealousy, corrupt politicians, and arson; And Cassie isn't sure staying in Stanton is worth the battle. But she's just stubborn enough to try.
