What does it mean to be someone - a single, continuous self, moving through moods you didn't choose, desires you can't fully explain, and relationships that keep mistaking you for the group you belong to?

This book begins where philosophy so often refuses to: inside. It starts with the subject's own lived experience - feeling, mood, desire, attitude - before that experience has been sorted, moralized, or turned into a social fact, and asks what a rigorous account of inner life would actually look like if it were held to the same discipline we normally reserve for the outer world. Drawing on Habermas and Luhmann, Merleau-Ponty and Russell, Donald Hoffman and Alasdair MacIntyre - and breaking with all of them where the argument demands it - the book builds outward from raw subjectivity to the attitudes we take toward one another, the fault lines of desire and its normativization, and finally to a five-part theory of identity supple enough to explain why the same person can be, at once, a name on a docket, a face a spouse recognizes, and a capacity no résumé has yet caught up with.
