Three hundred years after being sealed in deep underground vaults, an army sleeps in the cold, running combat drills every night while waiting for the war on the surface to end. They believe they are holding the line until the day comes to march out into the light. But when an emergency override awakens Captain Varga, an intelligence Theta frame with an unmapped imprint stirring inside, revival brings no celebration-only a dead silence, broken alarms, and an ancient electromechanical relay clicking to life on the vault's hardline.
A message from Surface Command arrives, followed by the terrifying appearance of an emissary wearing the exact, unaged face of their founding general, Aurek Tunn. Alongside him is Marzus, the Architect-an ancient mind trapped in the failing body of an eight-year-old child, wielding the power to manipulate the biological age of every soldier through their sync bands. With a word, twenty years are stolen from an officer in a single hour to demonstrate who holds the keys.
When Varga climbs a decommissioned air shaft and breaks through to the sun, they do not find the blasted wasteland promised by the war doctrine. Instead, they discover Halden, a thriving, peaceful surface city where the war ended nearly three centuries ago, and the four thousand sleepers below are remembered only as a tragic memorial and a children's nursery rhyme. Worse, the true horror lies buried in the city's sealed archives: the sleepers were never forgotten by the orbital masters in the sky; their minds were stolen to calculate life-support logistics for orbiting stations, and they are now scheduled for extraction as the last untouched human breeding stock.
As the garrison below breaks into mutiny and climbs to the surface under arms to take the city hostage, the orbital Directorate sets a ruthless deadline: retire the vault and age every sleeper by sixty years at sunset. Caught between an army desperate for vengeance, a surface population terrified of their own ancestors, and a dying tyrant with absolute control over human time, Varga must race down to the hidden node beneath the city foundations to seize root access before the sky strikes their world dead.
