The Heir Apparent is a sequel to the novel, The Broken World. Set in New Mexico in the early 1990s, it follows the Keane family through the gradual disintegration of the counterculture of the 1960s. As society moves to the right, the idealism of the 60's gradually succumbs to Nihilism and despair. Byrd Keane, who has been managing a natural foods cooperative and running a small organic farm in Upper Michigan, returns with his own family to confront the slow disintegration of his family of origin and of the place he loved. The novel is an unflinching look at the Reagan-sparked decline of American society. It is not for the faint of heart.
