The Guest Chamber is a novel by Elizabeth Reid Hope, first published in 1885. The story is set in England and revolves around the lives of two families, the Maitlands and the Lesters. The Maitlands are a wealthy family who live in a grand country house, while the Lesters are a middle-class family who live in a modest home nearby. The novel begins with the arrival of a young woman named Lilian Lester, who has been invited to stay with the Maitlands for a few weeks. Lilian is a distant cousin of the Maitlands and has never met them before. She is excited to be staying in such a grand house and hopes to make a good impression on her hosts. However, Lilian soon discovers that things are not quite as they seem in the Maitland household. She uncovers a dark secret that threatens to tear the family apart. As she tries to uncover the truth, Lilian finds herself drawn to the handsome and mysterious Mr. Maitland. But can she trust him? And will she be able to uncover the truth before it's too late? The Guest Chamber is a gripping tale of love, betrayal, and family secrets. It paints a vivid picture of life in late 19th century England and explores the themes of class, wealth, and social status. With its well-drawn characters, atmospheric setting, and intricate plot, this novel is sure to captivate readers of all ages. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
