The Grandissimes is a novel written by George W. Cable. It tells the story of two Creole families in New Orleans, the Grandissimes and the Santieners, and their interactions with each other and with the larger society around them. The novel explores themes of race, class, and identity in the post-Civil War South, as well as the tensions between Creole and Anglo-American cultures. The plot revolves around the love affair between Honor Grandissime, a wealthy Creole plantation owner, and Clotilde, a woman of mixed race who is also pursued by a wealthy Anglo-American planter. The novel also features a cast of colorful characters, including slaves, free people of color, and members of the white ruling class, all of whom are struggling to find their place in a rapidly changing society. The Grandissimes is considered a classic of Southern literature and an important work in the canon of American realism.1908. The book begins: It was in the Theater St. Philippe (they had laid a temporary floor over the parquette seats) in the city we now call New Orleans, in the month of September, and in the year 1803. Under the twinkle of numberless candles, and in a perfumed air thrilled with the wailing ecstasy of violins, the little Creole capitals proudest and best were offering up the first cool night of the languidly departing summer to the divine Terpsichore. For summer there, bear in mind, is a loitering gossip, that only begins to talk of leaving when September rises to go. It was like hustling her out, it is true, to give a select bal masque at such a very early-such an amusingly early date; but it was fitting that something should be done for the sick and destitute; and why not this? Everybody knows the Lord loveth a cheerful giver.
