Wagon master Owen Rourke has hauled difficult loads over bad country before, but this trip carries more than ordinary freight. A replacement pump casting weighing nearly two tons must reach the mining settlement of Silver Basin before rising water shuts down the lower workings.
Six wagons and thirty-six mules stand between San Marcos and the mine. Ahead are washed roads, steep grades, river crossings, failing equipment, and mountain weather already turning toward winter. Getting the freight through will depend less on luck than on experienced men, sound animals, and knowing when a road can be pushed-and when it cannot.
