I spent one shameless night thinking about the gorgeous stranger I met. The next day he introduced himself - as my son's new doctor.
A stranger who had knelt beside my sobbing seven-year-old and talked him through the finger prick I couldn't. For ninety seconds, I'm not carrying his diabetes alone.
That night, I think about him in ways a single mom has no business thinking.
The next morning he walks into the exam room: Dr. Beckett Shaw, my son's new pediatrician.
Koa's father promised forever, then caught a plane and never looked back. I know better now.
But when Koa crashes at midnight, Beckett answers on the first ring and kneels on my kitchen floor at 1 a.m.
He carries a juice box in one pocket for my son. In the other, a worn toy dinosaur - all that's left of the family he buried.
Koa starts saving him the blue crayon. I start saving him the seat beside mine.
Then he admits this island was only ever meant to be temporary.
I won't let my son love another man who leaves - even if I'm the one who has to send him away.
