This book explores the extraordinary role of folate in the body. While folate may not be a magic cure-all, its vital importance for essential bodily functions makes it nothing short of miraculous for those who lack it. Although folate deficiency was first identified over a century ago, recent medical advancements have revealed that this deficiency can be localized to the brain-a condition known as cerebral folate deficiency (CFD).
CFD is a serious yet often overlooked syndrome that can lead to neurodevelopmental and psychiatric symptoms, including epilepsy. Most notably, CFD has been linked to autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a condition affecting an increasing number of children worldwide. Many children with ASD may have unrecognized, yet treatable, folate abnormalities. Fortunately, CFD is treatable with leucovorin-a safe and effective form of folate, also known as folinic acid (distinct from folic acid). Leucovorin can cross into the central nervous system, correcting folate deficiency in the brain and significantly alleviating symptoms. This treatment offers new hope for individuals with CFD and ASD.
