Vinnie Thomas is the son of a Mexican farm worker who forges a living for her brood in the strawberry fields of California. Without the guidance of a father, Vinnie becomes a bad boy with a string of arrests the length of his arm. Luckily, his latest felony charge comes before a kindly, old judge who gives him a choice-prison or the military.
After four years in the navy, Vinnie has seen enough of the world between the Cuban Missile Crisis and Vietnam War and wants out. But he doesn't leave empty-handed. Not only did he earn a GED but college credit, too. Vinnie decides to pursue a college education. He takes on a tutor, Angela Nunez, to help him with a class he's failing. Angela is a beautiful Mexican woman-the type Vinnie can't resist. But Angela plays hard to get until she needs his help. Her brother Arturo is the problem. He's driving a wine delivery truck which goes against Chavez's boycott and the family's values.
After that, Arturo gets into one scrape after the other. And Vinnie is always called to be the savior. Finally, his protests against the Vietnam war are about to land him in jail. Vinnie convinces Arturo to choose another path and he heads down to Delano to work for Cesar Chavez and his farm workers cause.
Once Arturo is out of the way, Vinnie pulls out all the stops to win Angela's heart. But something isn't right. He discovers another obstacle is in the way-a former boyfriend who she idolizes. How can he compete with a dead man?
