Almost a month after Celine and Julian Rousseau celebrate their 24th wedding anniversary, Celine is at her boutique in downtown Detroit for a regular day of work tending her store. After she drives home early because she is not feeling well, she makes a shocking discovery. Julian, a clinical psychologist, has problems of his own that threaten to destroy their marriage, which triggers deep-rooted fears she has had since childhood. Fortunately, Kevin and Alison, their two college-age kids, are in Montreal, Quebec, spending the summer with their French-Canadian grandparents. As her marriage unravels, she turns to alcohol for solace. Celine's situation gets more complicated after she divulges her situation to her husband's best friend, Gary Blanding, a successful real estate professional. Meanwhile, Julian's career screeches to a halt due to the scandal he caused, which brings their family to the brink of financial ruin. Thankfully, Celine has a good income from her boutique and her artwork. As Celine realizes her biggest fear is coming true, and her marriage hangs in the balance, Gary wastes no time to win her love.
Torn between two men, who will she trust enough to go through life with? Julian, who can offer her no security, or Gary, who is financially stable and an all-around upstanding guy but not a man who lights her fire as Julian? But Gary's ultimate demonstration of love, commitment, and integrity change everything. Celine, Julian, and her son and daughter will never be the same.
