When the ten-year-old orphaned mixed blood Román Otero rescues Paul Chandler, Ro is reluctantly drawn into the orbit of the nearby Chandler ranch, despite the objections of his Apache grandmother, widely regarded as a witch on the reservation. In the years following World War II, Ro grows out of his shell while Jose retreats into one when that white world seems to reject him.
