I wanted to look at two families to see how World War Two might have affected them. I chose one family from each side of that struggle and when I began writing even I was not sure who would survive the conflict and if they would ever meet up again. Along the way I met some characters I hadn't expected to appear and who sometimes took me by surprise by doing so. I hope they have the same effect on my readers.
