A project can look finished on a dashboard long before the work is actually done.
When a major customer challenges a service ticket that HarborWorks has already marked resolved, analyst Tim Ruefli is pulled into Project Lantern, an effort to modernize how the company classifies, routes, and manages service requests.
What begins as a straightforward technology project soon exposes something harder. Different teams work from different records. Important decisions have no clear owner. A vendor needs decisions that HarborWorks has not made. Frontline employees know things the official systems do not. And as deadlines tighten, clean reports begin to hide messy operational realities.
Tim is observant and capable, but he is also learning as he goes. Some of his decisions help. Others travel farther than he expects.
As Project Lantern moves from requirements to demonstration, pilot, and finally cutover, the people involved must decide what evidence they trust, what risks they will carry, and who will be responsible when the new system meets the real world.
The Cutover is a business novel about technology projects, organizational decisions, and the gap between what a system records and what actually happens.
