The Butterfly That Lost Her Colours is a gentle, heartfelt picture book that helps children understand selective mutism through a warm, child-friendly metaphor. When a little butterfly suddenly loses her colours, she feels quiet, invisible, and unsure. With kindness, patience, and emotional safety, her colours slowly return - showing that a child's voice is never lost, only waiting for the right conditions to shine again.
Written by Natalie Gosney, a parent of autistic children with lived experience of selective mutism, this story offers comfort, understanding, and hope for children who struggle to speak in certain settings.
This beautifully illustrated book opens supportive conversations about anxiety, bravery, emotional safety, and the importance of gentle support.
Perfect for families, classrooms, SENCos, therapists, speech and language teams, and anyone supporting a child who finds speaking difficult.
A free accompanying resource pack for parents and teachers is available online.
