The slaves his family had helped escape and educate had become successful citizens after the Civil War, serving with the US 10th Cavalry (The Buffalo Soldiers) and earning a teaching degree at Wilberforce University. Their dream of returning to Alabama and teach children with the Freedman's Bureau is thwarted by the failure of the government's Reconstruction Act.
