Timmy is a young boy who feels alienated from his mother and stepfather. He gravitates toward his aging and beloved grandfather, who fills his head with wild fantasies of life beneath the sea. When his grandfather suddenly dies, Timmy feels adrift, and when his family takes a vacation on the North Carolina coast, he tries to remain close to his grandfather by living out some of the old man's fantasies.
