The Forgotten Story of the Blues Boom in Britain
In October 1958 a Chicago guitarist walked onto a Leeds stage with a Fender Telecaster turned up louder than anything the room had ever heard. Some walked out. The papers called it screaming guitar and howling piano. A handful of young Britons stayed, listened, and began a quiet, stubborn search that would reshape popular music.
This is not the familiar tale of a few gifted teenagers inventing the blues overnight. It is the story of how a country that had largely looked away from American electric blues slowly taught itself the music - through scratched 78s in attics, fading Radio Luxembourg signals, specialist shop counters, cramped club basements, and the patient evangelism of a few determined figures whose names rarely appear on the charts.
From Alexis Korner and Cyril Davies's three-person club above a Soho pub, through John Mayall's Manchester apprenticeship and the damp steps of the Ealing Club, to the Rolling Stones, Yardbirds, Cream and Fleetwood Mac, Simon Godfrey reconstructs the chain of discovery link by link. He shows how records became maps, clubs became classrooms, and admiration sometimes tipped into appropriation - while also recovering the overlooked custodians, the forgotten bands, and the real gains and losses for the American artists whose music made it all possible.
Intimate, rigorously researched and written with a storyteller's eye for the telling detail, The Blues They Found restores the human scale to one of the twentieth century's great cultural transfers. It is the story of what happens when people decide, one listener at a time, to go looking for a music their own country never taught them.
