What if your cancer was a 140-year-old debt that a past version of you left unpaid - and the only cure was going to court against the fae? When Mara SolÃs is diagnosed with a brain tumor at twenty-four, she expects fear, paperwork, and a treatment protocol. She doesn't expect a wilderness guide with eyes that won't fix on a color to tell her the tumor isn't what her doctor thinks it is.
It's a marker. A collection notice. Placed by the Hollow Court - an ancient faction of fae contract arbiters - against a debt her past-life self unknowingly agreed to in 1883. The debt doesn't expire at death. It waits. And now it's running out of patience. To dissolve the claim, Mara must find three pieces of hidden evidence scattered across Arizona - in the red rock formations of Sedona, the deep wilderness of the Superstition Mountains, and the border country of Cochise County where her past-life self once lived and lost everything. The evidence was left by that earlier version of herself, a twenty-two-year-old woman who felt the wrongness of what had been done to her and built a case for the soul who would come after her.
Cael Ashborne knows the landscape - both the mortal one and the one beneath it. He was sent to find Mara. He stayed because she is not what he expected. The Hollow Court is not cruel. It is indifferent, which is worse. It has waited a hundred and forty years. It will not wait much longer. The Bargain She Didn't Know She Made is a romantasy set against the ancient landscapes of Arizona - the vortex sites of Sedona, the canyon wilderness of the Superstitions, and the Grand Canyon's isolated North Rim. For readers who want fae law instead of fae cruelty, a love interest who chooses rather than claims, and a heroine who wins with evidence and argument rather than power. Some debts outlast death. But some arguments outlast everything.
