Arson. That's the official ruling when the Parramore Plaza, the city's most iconic landmark, goes down in flames. Witnesses see a janitor carry a package into the building. That man, Marco Abissi, has just been fired. It's an open-and-shut case. The Plaza's famed architect, Dante Costas, is listed among the missing. With no major investigation to cover, reporter Juni Bruder is left to write about the dead. Her interviews with families of the victims-office workers, tourists, first responders-will win a Pulitzer. She'll be dead within days. Her grieving brother, sorting through her papers, tries to solve the mystery that consumed her: What drove a decorated military veteran to destroy so many lives? Told through an inspired mix of documents, from phone transcripts to news stories to parole reports, The Arsonist's Last Words is a sly take on love, loss, and the slippery nature of truth.
