The Angel in the House is a Victorian-era poem by Coventry Patmore, first published in 1854. The poem is divided into two parts, the first of which describes the idealized feminine virtues of Patmore's wife, Emily. The second part is a tribute to Emily after her death, and describes her as a guardian angel who watches over her husband and family from heaven. The poem is written in a sentimental and romantic style, and celebrates the traditional gender roles of the Victorian era. The angel of the title is a metaphor for the perfect wife and mother, who is obedient, nurturing, and selfless. Patmore's portrayal of women in the poem reflects the societal expectations of the time, and has been criticized for perpetuating stereotypes and limiting women's roles.Despite its controversial themes, The Angel in the House was immensely popular in its time, and was widely read and admired. It was even parodied by other writers, including Virginia Woolf, who wrote a satirical essay titled The Angel in the House in which she criticized the poem's idealization of women.Today, The Angel in the House is considered a significant work of Victorian literature, and is studied for its insights into the cultural and social values of the era.Once more I came to Sarum Close, With joy half memory, half desire, And breathed the sunny wind that rose And blew the shadows o'er the Spire, And toss'd the lilac's scented plumes, And sway'd the chestnut's thousand cones, And fill'd my nostrils with perfumes, And shaped the clouds in waifs and zones. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
